Every commission starts with a conversation about the room, how the piece will be used, and the wood. Chris draws the piece, sources the lumber, and builds it in his Oakdale shop with proper joinery: mortise and tenon, dovetails, breadboard ends, turned and laminated parts made on the premises. Finishes are rubbed out by hand.
Over twenty years the shop has produced trestle and turned-leg dining tables for families on the south shore, refectory tables and quadrangle benches for a Gothic university campus, curved and upholstered rockers, tambour credenzas, live-edge slab tables, parquetry tops and a great deal of seating. The portfolio shows much of it in progress, because the joinery is the point.
Custom furniture from a Long Island maker costs more than a catalogue piece and lasts several lifetimes longer. Lead times run from a few weeks for a small piece to a season for a dining set.
Questions
Before you ask
- Do you design the furniture or do I bring a design?
- Either. Most clients bring photographs of pieces they like and a sense of size; Chris draws a design from that, or works from an architect’s or designer’s drawings when there is one.
- What woods do you work in?
- Mostly domestic hardwoods: white oak, cherry, walnut, maple and ash, plus mahogany, teak for outdoor work, and reclaimed timber when the piece calls for it.
- Where do you deliver?
- Chris delivers and installs across Long Island, New York City and southern Connecticut, and ships further afield by arrangement.
